Whitening your teeth can be a fast, cost effective way to brighten your teeth and enhance your smile. When done properly, whitening will not harm your teeth or gums. Significant lightening can be achieved in most cases; but the RESULTS CANNOT BE GUARANTEED. Whitening, like any other treatment, has some inherent risks and limitations. These are seldom serious enough to discourage you from having your teeth whitened, but should be considered in making a decision to have treatment.
Whitening involves wearing a custom-made tray (looks like a thin, transparent night guard) filled with a mild whitening gel. You need to wear the filled tray 30 minutes for approximately 14 days. Whitening is only effective if you wear the trays as prescribed.
Sensitivity is usually mild if your teeth are not normally sensitive. It may be necessary for you to reduce the amount of time or days your are wearing the whitening tray or stop using it for a short time to resolve the sensitivity. If your teeth are sensitive after whitening , a mild analgesic such as Tylenol or Advil will usually be effective to make you more comfortable until your teeth return to normal. You may also use Prevident; a prescription strength Fluoride Toothpaste to help alleviate sensitivity.
Temporary inflammation and/or a burning sensation of your gums can be caused by whitening. This is a minor problem and will resolve by itself in a day. Most of the time it results from placing too much material in the tray, so next time use less whitening gel.
Open cavities should be filled or badly leaking fillings should be properly restored prior to whitening. Whitening will normally lighten teeth but not fillings or crown/bridge work. You should be prepared to have any fillings in your front teeth replaced after whitening so that they will match your newly whitened teeth. Additionally, if you plan to complete some cosmetic work; whitening is strongly recommended first.
Following completion of whitening, there may be a gradual relapse of the teeth back to their original color. You may choose to wear your whitening trays periodically to keep from occurring at all.
